Nurturing Nature: How Grand Rapids Schools and Bill & Paul's Are Taking Learning Outside

Nurturing Nature: How Grand Rapids Schools and Bill & Paul's Are Taking Learning Outside

As any Michigander knows, there is no substitute for the fresh air, open trails, and the lessons learned simply by stepping outside. In the Grand Rapids area, a growing number of educators are ditching the traditional four walls for a classroom under the canopy. Outdoor and nature-based education is thriving in our community, helping kids build confidence, environmental stewardship, and a lifelong love of the outdoors.

Here at Bill & Paul's Sporthaus, we believe that connecting with nature is essential. That's why we are so passionate about supporting the local schools that are turning the great outdoors into an everyday learning experience.

The Grand Rapids Schools Leading the Way

West Michigan is home to several incredible programs that prioritize outdoor exploration:

  • West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science (WMAES): This tuition-free public charter school serves students from pre-K through 12th grade on a massive 62-acre campus. Their curriculum is grounded in environmental education, allowing students to learn early academic skills through daily outdoor discovery and hands-on exploration.
  • Blandford School: A unique 6th-grade program offered by Grand Rapids Public Schools, Blandford School is located right at the Blandford Nature Center. The students' true classroom consists of over 100 acres of woods, streams, and fields, challenging them with a rigorous curriculum while heightening their environmental awareness.
  • Northview Field school: Believing that children are inspired by nature, Field School provides an immersive outdoor learning environment. Students spend time outdoors through all seasons, learning to treat the natural world as a living textbook while building a strong growth mindset and problem-solving skills.
  • C.A. Frost Environmental Science Academy: A signature theme school within Grand Rapids Public Schools, C.A. Frost brings scholars' love of nature into their everyday learning experiences. With an elementary campus and a middle/high school campus, they incorporate environmental science into all subject areas through hands-on learning, regular field trips, and overnight wilderness adventures.
  • Zoo School: This unique 6th-grade program from Grand Rapids Public Schools immerses scholars in a learning atmosphere that includes classrooms, the entire John Ball Zoo, and over 100 wooded acres surrounding it. Students explore topics like astronomy, zoology, forestry, and water sampling alongside core subjects, taking part in hands-on experiences such as animal feeding, raising salmon, and unforgettable camping trips.
  • Goodwillie Environmental School: Part of Forest Hills Public Schools, this 5th and 6th-grade program embraces the elements by having students learn—and even eat lunch—outside every day. Their project-based curriculum naturally integrates physical activities like daily hikes, snowshoeing, and caring for school grounds right into the school day.

How Bill & Paul's Sporthaus Supports Outdoor Education

When a student's classroom is outside in unpredictable Michigan weather, having the right gear isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity. Kids need durable outerwear, comfortable footwear, and reliable layers to stay focused on learning rather than the cold or the rain.

To help outfit the next generation of explorers, our team at Bill & Paul's is dedicated to helping families find exactly what they need for a successful year outside. Whether it's getting expertly fitted for warm base layers, finding sturdy hiking boots, or picking out a reliable rain jacket from our shop, our goal is to ensure every student is prepared to tackle the elements and fully embrace their outdoor curriculum.
